Writing About Squirrels
Squirrels are fun—fun to watch and fun to write about. Below are some squirrelly ideas to get you started writing.

Watch the antics of a squirrel for five or ten minutes. Try to list everything it does. Then write one sentence to "sum up" a squirrel.
After watching a squirrel for awhile, write down something you could learn from a squirrel about living a good life.
Sit quietly beside a tree or in a tree. Imagine what the tree could tell you about squirrels. Write a story that begins, "The tree said...."
Pretend that you are a detective assigned to follow a squirrel. Actually follow a squirrel as far as you can—even if you can only follow it with your eyes. Then write a report about the squirrel’s activities. Can you make your report funny?
Write a poem about a squirrel. Try to use descriptive language.
Describe a perfect gift for a squirrel friend.
Imagine that you could talk to a squirrel. What would you say? What questions would you ask. Write an interview with the squirrel.
Make up a joke or riddle, or draw a cartoon, based on a tree full of frisky baby squirrels or squirrels storing nuts for winter or squirrels digging up flower bulbs to eat.
Pretend that you and your family are all squirrels. Write a story about the way your squirrel family celebrated a birthday or took a vacation.
Read about different kinds of squirrels. Then draw pictures of three different kinds of squirrels and write something about each one. You might include the color and size of each squirrel and where each one lives.
