Squirrel Tales
Squirrel stories written by kids (and big kids).

Children often tell us wonderful stories about their encounters with squirrels. If you have a squirrel tale either a true story or one you have made up please email it to tonialbert@aol.com. If we decide to post it on this page, we'll ask you for a written permission from your parents. (We welcome squirrel art, too.)

From Andrew Rankin, 4th grade, DeSoto, Missouri
Mrs. Albert,
I have funny stories to tell about squirrels. When we bought an old house to rehab, our house had squirrels upstairs in the attic. We didn't know this at first. We finished off the upstairs attic to be a bedroom for my brothers and me. Soon we heard scratching and running on the roof and in the walls. Soon we found a hole in the house and saw a squirrel get in. We got a trap and chased them all around the yard and finally the squirrel rounded the corner of our house and ran into the trap. My Dad took it about fifty miles away and released it. That wasn't the end, because we had more. It took us about two years to get all the squirrels out, because they kept chewing new holes. We put aluminum over the holes. Now, the squirrels stay outside and my Dad and I are going to build a squirrel house for them.

I'm enjoying your books. Thank you for them.

From Mary Charlton, squirrel lover, Kirkland, Washington
Mary Charlton first wrote," I have a squirrel in my backyard with blue eyes! Is this something extremely rare? They are definitely baby blue eyes."

I replied that I had never seen a blue-eyed squirrel and couldn't find any information about how rare it might be. The squirrels I've observed have brown eyes, and albino squirrels have pink eyes.

Then Mary sent these wonderful photos with a note: "Baby Blue is a beautiful little sweetheart. So gentle when she takes peanuts from my hand, but certainly fights for her place in the backyard. She comes running down the maple tree when I call to her. I yell out, 'Baby, come!' and she dashes for the door to get her treat. I'm really enjoying getting to know her. Do you think she knows she's special?"

Oh, those baby blues! Mary Charlton loves her blue-eyed squirrel.

From Mary: "Let your squirrel-feeding readers know that squirrels love pumpkin seeds. Baby is a huge fan."
