the incredible coral reefThis book invites kids to explore dazzling coral reefs, to hop on an underwater merry-go-round of gaudy colors and crazy shapes. Page by page, kids get to know the reef community. They learn how ancient coral reefs are reeling from the effects of human carelessness. And they discover what they can do to help protect these brilliant oases in the sea.
author/adventurerToni Albert has explored coral reefs in Hawaii, Florida, Grand Cayman, Mexico, Belize, Panama, and Granada. To research this book, she made notes underwater in a plastic notebook with an ordinary pencil and then spent hours studying reef field guides. She swam with stingrays in the open ocean, visited an endangered sea turtle farm, swam with nurse sharks, and explored a sunken wreck. Her goal is to introduce children to the dazzling world of reefs and to awaken them to the terrible loss when reefs collapse. By suggesting ways that children can help save the reefs, she unleashes their concern, energy, and ideas.
Excerpt from the author's "Reef Report" - The Incredible Coral Reef, page 49 “I didn’t collect all the trash I saw [on the beach]. It probably would have taken hours. But at least I tried to undo some of the mess that careless individuals had made. Sometimes we feel overwhelmed by how big environmental problems seem to be and we wonder, ‘What can one person do?’ Well, one person can at least undo what one other person did. One person can encourage other people to act differently. And one person can get together with others and really make a difference. Remember, massive coral reefs are built by tiny individuals working together, and the structure they build sustains all the life on the reef.” |
